Legislators don’t need to be the ones that push back against overreaching governors. On Monday, October 19, the Adams County Board of Commissioners in Idaho rescinded “all orders, recommendations, and restrictions put in place by policies relating to Covid-19.” They further declared that “Adams County is open for business and back to normal.”

Judy Boyle, Representative for Idaho’s District 9, said that, “The commissioners passed [Resolution 2021-04] unanimously on Monday. I have sent it to other Idaho counties, and I urge them to pass something similar.” Adams County is in Boyle’s district.

The Commissioners were succinct in their Resolution, stating:

WHEREAS, Adams County citizens are more than capable of self-government and controlling their lives, businesses, and decisions regarding their own health care without interference from any government agency or bureaucrat.

"WHEREAS, We are the least regulated county in the state and have the least cases with zero deaths solely caused by Covid-19.

"WHEREAS, Adams County rescinds all orders, recommendations, and restrictions put in place by policies relating to Covid-19. And we resolve that Adams County is open for business and back to normal.

"NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, on Monday, October 19, 2020, the Board of Commissioners approve Resolution 2021-04.

In a statement to UncoverDC, Commissioner Viki Purdy said, “It’s time to flatten the oppression curve. I am heartbroken at the way this virus has been used to destroy lives.  Suicide up 400%, our elderly being left to die alone, businesses lost or incurring serious debt to survive in someone's insane version of the ‘new normal.’"

Purdy stated that whoever came up with the current messaging and practices regarding Covid “lacks common sense and has little respect for American values and our amazing culture of self-government.  This is a perfect example of bureaucrats trying to fix a problem and creating 20 more.  If the media and the bureaucrats were required to cut their salaries in half like everyone else how long would these inhumane practices continue?”

The Commissioners’ resolution was popular on Twitter, with more than 10,000 people reading the resolution in just a few hours. Comments were overwhelmingly supportive, such as:

“This is what it looks like when mature adults are in charge.”
“I want to move to that place.”
“Where is Adams County? I’ve packed my bags.”
“Yes, it’s ‘We the people,’ not ‘We the government.’”
“I just sent it to my commissioners.”

The declaration even caught the attention of people in the United Kingdom:
“Can every County in the UK now please draft something like this?”

Boyle said that “[L]egislators cannot, by design, solve all problems. Citizens need to pay attention to the actions of their school boards, city councils, and county commissioners.”

Boyle also said her county’s commissioners “took on the Feds a few weeks ago” regarding ordinances on wildfires and controlled burns. “Finally the counties are beginning to assert their power,” she said.

When contacted by UncoverDC, the Adams County Health Center had no comment regarding the Commissioners’ Resolution, but they did state that never have they been overwhelmed with Covid cases.

Adams County, Idaho is a two-hour drive north of Boise, the state capitol, and is home to approximately 4,000 residents.
